Mere blocks from the White House, an American University alumnus is making waves. While folks across the nation are captivated by Michael Cohen’s testimony, it’s local, too. Scout’s honor. Definitely. For sure.
Cohen, the former personal lawyer for President Donald Trump and now convicted felon, is spending his Wednesday testifying in open session before the House Oversight Committee on Capitol Hill—which is, again, a brisk 36 minute walk from the White House. It’s part of Cohen’s three-day return to the city of his alma mater: he was in closed door session with the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday and will be joining the House Intelligence Committee in closed door session on Thursday. The AU Eagle’s hearing has prompted D.C. bars to open early and offer drink specials.
His public testimony includes calling his former boss a racist, conman, and cheat. Cohen’s testimony explains how he was “actively negotiating in Russia” during the 2016 campaign to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. That makes for two American University wonks connected to alleged Russian intervention in U.S. politics. AU grad student Maria Butina pleaded guilty to covertly working with the Russian government while cultivating relationships with the U.S. conservative movement and has been in custody since July. Long Island native Cohen earned his bachelor’s degree from American University in 1988 before heading to Thomas M. Cooley Law School, by some measures “the worst law school in America” per Politico and located 552 miles from the White House. The Cohen trending across the country on Twitter is not to be confused with American University’s Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies’ faculty fellow Michael Cohen.
While American University publicly congratulated alum Charlie Wachtel, who won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar on Sunday evening for his work on Blackkklansman, don’t hold your breath for Cohen to receive similar treatment. The university’s communications office, located approximately 3.8 miles from the White House, says it has “no comment to offer on Michael Cohen’s testimony.”
