Councilmember Jack Evans

Questions surrounding D.C. Council member Jack Evans’ relationship with a digital sign company called Digi Media have shadowed the long-time D.C. politician for months.

Now, a federal grand jury has issued a subpoena for documents on the matter, according to a Washington Post report.

In 2016, Evans sponsored legislation that would have benefited Digi Media in its fight with city regulators to put up electronic signs across the city. The councilmember came under scrutiny when the Washington Post reported that a consulting firm Evans created received $50,000 from the company — and also shares of stock. (The Post’s coverage followed earlier reports by the District Dig’s Jeffrey Anderson into the Evans’ dealings with Digi Media).

Evans later said he returned the money and the shares before introducing legislation that would have helped out the firm. Evans pulled the bill when there weren’t enough votes. The councilmember has denied any wrongdoing.

The District’s ethics office has been looking into the matter and now so are federal investigators.

Evans did not respond to a request for comment.
