Celebrate Pi Day, women, Italian fashion, the culture of Montenegro, and much more this week. If you’re bored in D.C. it’s your own fault.
MONDAY, MARCH 11
PUT A BIRD ON IT: Use textured papers and acrylic paint to create bird collages with local artist Jennifer Wilkin Penick. Bring a photo of your favorite bird or go wild and freestyle your fowl. Your bird can be elegant, charming, or quirky—this is America, the choice is yours. All supplies are included, but BYO smock or apron; birds are notoriously messy. You’ll leave with a frame-worthy creation, a perfect gift for your bird-loving tweetheart. (Shop Made In DC, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., $50)
A GOOD SIGN: Celebrate Women’s History Month by showing off your knowledge of women through the ages. This inclusive trivia experience features American Sign Language-English interpreters, happy hour deals, and prizes for the top 3 teams. If you’re looking for a sign to go out on a Monday, here it is. (Biergarten Haus, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., FREE)
ACA’SCUSE ME: Do you want to feel classy for free? Yale’s oldest all-gender acapella group, Redhot & Blue, pays tribute to everyone from Beyoncé and The Beatles to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Billie Holiday on the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. (Kennedy Center, 6 p.m., FREE)
JAZZ SHEROES: Are you haunted by the ghost of an old timey jazz chanteuse who’s angry she’s been overshadowed by men? Appease her by listening to four jazz artists as they sing and tell you the stories of their personal jazz sheroes in celebration of Women’s History Month. Revel in the the lives and music of Carmen McRae, Lil Armstrong, Shirley Horn, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and other famous ladies of jazz whose legacies are all too often overlooked. TUESDAY, MARCH 12
RESIN D’ETRE: Give me one good resin not to attend this workshop to create a UV resin pendant or keychain. Get crafty with resin then rapidly harden it with a UV light. I would make a joke about “rapidly harden,” but that would be distasteful. (Halcyon Arts Lab, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $35)
ZINE OUT: Explore zine culture and history and make your own zine at the DC Zinefest Zine Lab. These self-published mini magazines can be about anything, so take advantage of the library setting and learn something totally new or deep dive into something you love. If you create a zine about cats, the mysteries of the universe, pastries, or Diane Keaton’s Instagram presence, please send me a copy. (Woodridge Neighborhood Library, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m., FREE)
DREAM$: Talk to two life coaches about finding your purpose—your reason to get up every morning other than coffee, your raison d’etre—and how to get paid to do it. You’ll walk away with a blueprint to your dream life, which sounds cumbersome but charming. (The Lemon Collective, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., $25)
JOYFUL NOISE: Do you struggle to organize your neighbors into five-part harmonies on your own? Join this community sing for all ages led by artist-in-residence Ysaye Barnwell. (Levine Music School, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., $5)

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13
IT’S CALLED FASHION: Apparently today is the third international Italian Design Day. What do we do with this information? Attend Italian Fashion Reload, a conversation at the Italian Embassy addressing the history of Italian fashion in the context of the future of the century. Steam your best Missoni for Target and channel your inner Donatella Versace, because Italian Design Day only comes once a year. (Italian Cultural Institute at the Embassy of Italy, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., FREE with registration)
PI IN THE SKY: Don’t get caught without a pie on Pi Day like a fool! Prepare by learning to make you own buttery, flaky crust, cherry, and apple fillings, and fancy designs for the top. As the saying goes, “A lattice-top pie temporarily eases the void of existence!” If you’re like me and have disassociated from anything related to math because math class filled you with terror and upset your stomach, this is also a great opportunity to just eat a whole pie—which may also upset your stomach. Ticket price includes everything you need to make two pies and all the wine you need to make this fun. (Mess Hall, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $65)
HGTV IRL: A new season of Queer Eye premieres this week, so prepare for the inevitable realization that you live like a slovenly mole person with this interior design class. Learn how to choose colors and mix patterns with confidence that might just seep into other avenues of your life. If you’re not afraid of a bold print or the ire of your cohabitors, you’re not afraid of anything! Ticket includes cocktails and materials to build a color palette. (Fostr Collaborative, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., $45)
DISCOVER MONTENEGRO: Did you know that the traditional folk dance of the Montegerings is the “eagle dance,” which involved dancing in circles with couples alternating in the center, and is finished by the dancers standing on each other shoulders in a human pyramid? Neither did I until I read the Wikipedia page for Montenegro just now. But you can discover Montenegro for yourself at its embassy, where you’ll meet the ambassador and diplomats, a heavy buffet of Montenegrin food, and open bar with Montenegrin wine, and native art and film. (Embassy of Montenegro, 7-9:30 p.m., $48)
MORE: Admissions (Studio Theatre, 8 p.m., $52), Bordeaux Wine Dinner (B Too, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $89.50), Estrogenius All Female Stand Up Comedy (Colony Club, 8 p.m., $10), Watercolor Painting and Cocktails (Union Market, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m., $55)

Learn all about these artists in pop-up talks, play with arts and crafts, and catch performances by Syncopated Ladies, the world-renowned all-lady tap dance group. You’ll leave with a greater knowledge of contemporary female artists and a vague desire to take a tap class. (National Gallery of Art East Building, 6 p.m.-9 p.m., FREE with registration)
ME MYSELF & EYE: Inspired by the exhibition Eye to I: Self-Portraits From 1900 to Today, local writer and DCist contributor Willona Sloan will lead participants in a self-portrait writing workshop reflecting on how we see ourselves and how we obscure how other see us. Earlier in this guide I made up a quote about pie and existential dread, so I’ll consider that my writing self-portrait and leave a spot open for one of you. Writing materials and creative prompts will be provided, BYO angst. (National Portrait Gallery, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., FREE with registration)
NEEDLE FREE: Put the “arm” in “warm” with this arm knitting class. Perfect for needle phobic knitters, participants will create a chunky scarf or cowl while enjoying light snacks and drinks, presumably fed by snack assistants due to the nature of arm knitting. (The Lemon Collective, 6:30 p.m.-8:30, $25-$40)
MORE: District Distilling Tour and Tasting (District Distilling Co., 6 p.m.-8 p.m., $10), Chris Redd (The Big Hunt, 8 p.m. and 9:45 p.m., $25), Andrew Rannells (Sixth & I, 6 p.m.-7 p.m., $20-$45) Remember Jones: Back to Black – A Tribute to Amy Winehouse (Union Stage, 8 p.m.-9 p.m., $15-$30)
