This St. Patrick’s Day, a local beer hall is hoping for more than a little luck. Franklin Hall is hosting a fundraiser on Sunday to support Nathan Epps, a staff member who will have surgery to donate a part of his liver to his 8-month-old daughter.
“He’s one of everybody’s favorites, always comes in smiling,” says Nathan Kazaitis, the assistant general manager of Franklin Hall. “You’ve never heard anybody say anything bad about the guy.” Epps started as a security guard at the beer hall about eight months ago before working his way to a barback position.
His 8-month-old daughter was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare disease that affects the liver and bile ducts in infants. Kazaitis says that Epps is the backbone of his family and spends most of his time at the hospital with his daughter when he’s not at work. Rather than wait any longer on a transplant list, Epps decided to donate a piece of his liver to his daughter. While recovering from surgery, he will have to be out of work for two months.
With hospital bills already piling up, Franklin Hall is helping with the costs of Epps’ medical bills. Starting at 11:30 a.m., the beer hall will donate 25 percent of the day’s bar sales and 100 percent of Manor Hill Pilsner and RAR Country Ride pint purchases to the cause during Sunday’s event. Guests can expect fundraising activities, including a giant Connect Four tournament where the winner will receive a pair of tickets to a Washington Nationals game.
There will also be a raffle with more prizes, including gift baskets from the Bruery and La Colombe, class packs to Pulse House of Fitness, a terrarium class at the Lemon Collective, and more. Individual raffle tickets cost $2 apiece, but you can get 15 tickets for $20. The beer hall has also launched a GoFundMe for Epps.
“We hope to raise as much as we can,” Kazaitis says. “With it being St. Patrick’s Day, we never know how crazy it’s going to be.”
