Nicecream, a local ice cream chain that specializes in nitrogen-frozen desserts, will give away free ice cream on Thursday, March 21. It’s the company’s celebration of “321 Day,” honoring the temperature of the liquid nitrogen that freezes their ice cream (-321 degrees Fahrenheit).
The process works like this: For each order, Nicecream combines cream and other ingredients to make specific flavors. Then the mixture is poured into a stand mixer along with very, very cold liquid nitrogen, freezing it as it’s mixed up.
The company, which debuted in Clarendon in 2014, will give out free ice cream all day long at each of its four locations, including shops in Adams Morgan, Shaw, and Old Town Alexandria. Though you’re only allowed one free cup per order, there’s no stopping you from getting right back in line after diving into your first scoop.
Each store offers 6-8 flavors, such as vanilla bean, dark chocolate chunk, cold brew coffee, coconut ash, salted caramel, and a mysterious rotating flavor. If you’re one of those “it’s too cold for ice cream!” people, Nicecream offers hot chocolate and Swing’s coffee for purchase.
