Let your kites fly high on the National Mall

Whether you’re a kite flying professional, a feeble flying noob, or someone who just loves seeing the colorful toys fill the sky, the Blossom Kite Festival is a day for kite fans of all ages. The event is complete with flying demonstrations and a kite makers’ competition where a grand prize winner will receive a Samsung Galaxy S10+. Children can make their own kites at the event’s activity station, or you can bring your own. Kites are also available for purchase on site.

Celebrate the trans community at a new festival

The DC Area Transmasculine Society will host its first Trans Visibility Community festival to celebrate the journeys of trans people. The inclusive festival will feature two open mic sessions, film screenings, raffles, and more. Trans artists and creatives will also showcase their work, which will be available for purchase at the event. Food and beverages will be provided, and all ages are welcome.

See films by powerful women on the big screen

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is hosting an all-day film festival that highlights female film directors wide-ranging bodies of work. The event features films by Alice Guy Blaché, Lois Weber, Zora Neale Hurston, and more. There will also be post-film discussions with experts throughout the afternoon.

Learn about gentrification in D.C. through film

American University professor Sonya Grier’s short film “DogParks and CoffeeShops: Diversity Seeking in Changing Neighborhoods” explores three different D.C. neighborhoods and their relationship to gentrification. The film will be followed by a Q&A with Grier. It’s a part of the exhibition A Right to the City, which has spread all over the District since the Anacostia Community Museum closed for renovations earlier this year.

Watch lights and projections aglow at Robin Bell’s closing night party

Local projectionist and activist Robin Bell will end his light and projection exhibition at the Corcoran School in style on Sunday, just blocks from the White House. Bell will mix live installations on the Flagg Building’s grand staircase while several dancers and musicians react to them, including an ensemble with 30 guitars and a group of 20 dancers. The event hopes to inspire participants to be more open to the outside world.
