This is a great week to plan your eco-friendly burial, enjoy the cherry blossoms sans crowd under the cover of darkness, drink on a roof deck to Marvin Gaye, and learn about finances.
MONDAY, APRIL 1
DIGGS IT: If you’re into public radio and Hamilton, boy do I have the event for you. Ari Shapiro (All Things Considered) and Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, duh) will be in conversation at Sixth & I, the proceeds from which will fund future cultural programming. Not only with these two marvelous men talk about success, storytelling, and the intersection of race and religious identity, but Diggs’ experimental hip-hop trio clipping. will play live. The cheap seats are sold out, but you can still buy great seats for $150, which includes a dessert reception after the event. You can also pony up more for VIP meet-and-greets, swag bags, and complimentary drinks. (Sixth & I, 7:30 p.m., $150-$1,000)
DEATH BECOMES GREEN: Recycling while you’re alive is great, but how can you be as green as possible in death? Gail Rubin, a certified thanatologist (person who studies the forensic and psychological aspects of death) and death educator will teach you about evolving eco death trends, like green burial, alkaline hydrolysis, and the carbon footprint of cremation. (Kramerbooks & Afterwords, 6:30 p.m., FREE)
HELLO DARKNESS: Seeing the cherry blossoms in the daylight is for tourists and children. Avoid the crowds and take this 1.8 mile, two-hour guided night walk around the Tidal Basin. BLOCK PARTY: If you’ve been living life on the sidelines and have never learned how to make a block print, here’s your shot. What you put in that pouch is up to you: dreams, macadamia nuts, unsent love letters—the choice is yours. (Shop Made in DC at the Wharf, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., $55)
DISCO YOGA: Sure, you could do yoga outside in the “sunlight” because it’s “spring.” OR you could do yoga underground in the darkness like a flexible naked mole rat.
