Ernie Grunfeld, long the subject of Washington Wizards fans’ ire, will no longer be the president of the basketball team after serving in the role for 16 seasons, the team announced on Tuesday.
“We did not meet our stated goals of qualifying for the playoffs this season and, despite playing with injuries to several key players, we have a culture of accountability and a responsibility of managing to positive outcomes,” said Monumental Sports & Entertainment CEO Ted Leonsis, who owns the team. “I wish to thank Ernie for his service to the Washington Wizards. He and his family have been great leaders in our community and have worked tirelessly to make us a top NBA franchise.”
Team star John Wall, who has been out most of the season due to injury, chimed in on Twitter to thank Grunfeld for getting him to the District and expressing his hope for future seasons.

Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations Tommy Sheppard is now in charge of hoops for Monumental, per the team, and the Wizards will mount a search for a new president at the end of the season. Sheppard will be among the candidates.
Before Grunfeld was hired for 2003-04 basketball season, he was the general manager of the New York Knicks and the Milwaukee Bucks. Under Grunfeld, the Wizards had a record of 568-724, and reached playoffs eight times in his almost 16 seasons with them. For all his time with the Wizards, though, the championship remained elusive—the team didn’t even see finals play.
That’s part of the reason why he has been such an unpopular figure among Wizards devotees. As one fan who protested Grunfeld explained in a Washington Post op-ed: “In Grunfeld’s tenure as team president, Washington has consistently developed players poorly, made awful decisions in free agency, and drafted badly.”
This year, the team has 32 wins and 46 losses, putting it in eleventh place in the Eastern Conference and officially out of contention for the playoffs.
The response to Grunfeld’s termination on social media has been pretty celebratory.
