Uber’s dockless electric scooters have officially hit District streets as of Tuesday morning, the company announced in a press release. You can access Jump scooters directly from your Uber app—they’re free to unlock and then 15 cents per minute of riding after that.

The company already operates Jump dockless bikes in D.C., but until now had not had an e-scooter option available in the city to compete with Bird, Lyft, Skip, Spin, and all the other companies that have become prominent in the city over the last year. The two-wheelers and their devotees can be found all over the District, parked in random places and whizzing past pedestrians on the sidewalk and in bike lanes. (While dockless bikes must be parked to a rack or street sign when not in use, scooters can be left anywhere.) Though regulations introduced last year have slowed the scooters down to 10 miles per hour, the D.C. Department of Transportation estimated that as many as 16,800 scooters could be on the streets in 2019.

To use a Jump scooter, you can reserve it ahead of time in the Uber app, which shows you the location of all nearby scooters. You can also simply walk up to a scooter you see and scan the QR code to unlock it.

Uber purchased Jump in May 2018, as part of its effort to break into the dockless vehicle market and “expand the menu of affordable, reliable transportation options available within the Uber app,” the company says. The scooters are available in ten cities around the country now. Uber has also invested in Lime, another company scooting around town.

D.C. appears to be a pretty friendly place for scooter startups. A report last year found that seven in ten residents like the scooters, though they haven’t been without controversy as people whirring around on them have started to get injured.
