A loud, chubby guy with an orange face and static-prone hair is making his first trip to Anacostia this summer. No, not that guy. It’s Ernie, from Sesame Street!
Big Bird, Elmo, Bert, Ernie, and the rest of the “Sesame Street” Muppets are hitting the road for a nationwide road trip. Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind the iconic children’s program, announced on Tuesday that the show will stop in D.C. from June 6-8 as part of a 10-city, 50th anniversary tour.
While in Washington, they’ll tape a segment for the show’s 50th season that will include stops at local landmarks and community organizations. Sesame Workshop has not released a location list.
They will also host a free family festival at Anacostia National Park on the last day of the visit. Word on the street is that there will be a cookies-and-milk snack station, courtesy of one sweets-inclined blue Muppet.

“From our vibrant local neighborhoods to our beautiful rivers to our many historic monuments and museums, there is certainly so much for the entire Sesame Street family to see and share here in D.C.,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a press release. “We are happy to welcome them to Washington, D.C. in June.”
The tour starts June 1 in New York and includes stops in D.C., Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Denver, Seattle, and Los Angeles. The 50th season of “Sesame Street” premieres in November.
“This summer’s road trip, and our visit to our nation’s capital, will demonstrate the power of media to engage and teach—something Sesame Workshop has focused on from the very beginning,” said Steve Youngwood, Sesame Workshop’s president of media and education and chief operating officer said in a press release about the tour.
