The scene at the Caps watch party as the team took the Stanley Cup.

It was a memorable bit of mayhem in Chinatown last year when the Washington Capitals finally banished their playoff curse and lifted the Stanley Cup for the first time in 43 years.

The wild scene was made slightly more so by the fact that the team itself was actually thousands of miles away in Las Vegas. In Washington, the scores of red-clad fans watched the game on huge screens in a giant viewing party — both inside and outside of Capital One Arena. There was tension, tears, screams of delight. And beer bottles. So many beer bottles.

It was perhaps with that playoff magic in mind that the Capitals announced the team was bringing the away game viewing party back to Capital One Arena for Game 4 of their series against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday.

The stakes, admittedly, are not quite as high. Washington currently leads Metro division rival Carolina 2-1 in the series, but it’s still only the first round, so there’s a lot of hockey still to go.

The Caps won their first two games at home, but were pushed around in 5-0 loss in Game 3 on Monday. This despite the slightly shocking pugilistic contributions of captain Alex Ovechkin.
