Take a weekend stroll this Earth Day

Uptown Main Street will host its second annual Earth Day Umbrella Stroll, where attendees can bring their own decorated umbrellas and celebrate Earth Day with umbrella cookies, recycled art, games, food, and other activities. Before the stroll, guests can join one of the cleanup efforts at three locations: 14th and Spring Road NW, 14th and Crittenden NW, and 7th and Kennedy Street NW. Groups will meet up at Andromeda Transcultural Health and start strolling to Upshur Park around noon.

Groove to Marvin Gaye at the National Postal Museum

Now that the U.S. Postal Service released a Marvin Gaye stamp, it’s time to celebrate. The Smithsonian National Postal Museum will honor the D.C.-raised soul singer in Make Me Wanna Holler: Exploring D.C.’s Music Legacy. Representatives of the museum and the U.S. Postal Service will give their remarks to kick off the event, followed by a day filled with poetry, music, and more. If you bring your own tote bag or t-shirt, you can have it printed with inspirational text during the event. The Marvin Gaye stamps will be available for purchase.

Celebrate black joy through music at the Hirshhorn 

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden will host a community concert outside on its plaza featuring more than 20 local artists performing folk, jazz, gospel, hip hop and soul songs. The event uses freedom songs, liberation chants, and other tunes that are joyous and uplifting. Performers include Keanna Faircloth, DJ Honey, Eden Gem, and many more.

Ride along the river at the Anacostia River Festival

The National Park Service and the 11th Street Bridge Park present this year’s Anacostia River Festival (moved to this weekend following inclement weather last weekend). The event celebrates the Anacostia River and the 100th birthday of Anacostia Park. Guests can explore the river on a canoe, ride along in the bike parade, play lawn games, and more.

See a music performance you can feel in your soul

The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts and the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation present “Seoul to Soul,” a musical extravaganza complete with Korean American and African American classical music, dance, and drums. The show tells the story of an enslaved woman, as she travels through time to see her descendant become an opera star.
