Let it all out on the Mall

If the fear of the cold has kept you from attending Catharsis on the Mall, the annual weekend of art and expression on the National Mall, you’re in luck: Organizers have moved the event from November to this weekend, when temperatures are expected to be in the 70s. The Mall will be covered with art installations, and the weekend’s events are designed for restorative healing and creative expression, including classes for yoga and jiu-jitsu, a workshop entitled Dealing With Climate Anxiety, and a DJ-led dance party with the theme “Extinction Rebellion.” Like at Catharsis’ spiritual sibling, Burning Man, the whole thing culminates in the burning of “The Temple” in a symbol of renewal.

Tour some works in progress

Sure, you could go down near the National Mall and tour some very old art and architecture any day, but how often do you get to watch public works of art in-progress? At the annual Pow! Wow! DC event, artists from D.C. and beyond take 10 days to cover the Union Market district with original murals. Head on a guided walking tour of more than a dozen of these murals in progress. Arrive at the starting point a little early to catch the festival’s official kickoff party—it starts at noon at Wunder Garten.

Travel the world without renewing your passport

For one day a year, the city’s embassies transform from fancy nondescript buildings tourists inexplicably take photos of into mini festival sites. At the Around the World Embassy Tour, more than 50 embassies will welcome visitors inside, where they’ll serve local cuisine, host music and dance performances, and offer games and workshops. You can sample rum at the Guyanese embassy, hear the oud at the embassy of Oman, and try on traditional costumes at the Sri Lankan embassy. Take note, though, that there are often long lines.

Count on going to a festival

If Coachella is for enthusiasts of flower crowns and CBD, the National Math Festival is for the folks who are more likely to compare graphing calculators. That’s not to say the festival is all equations: There are films and book talks for adults, and games, puzzles, and math-ish crafts for kids. In 2017, 20,000 math aficionados attended the fest in 2017. If you’re already calculating the square root of that guest list, this is probably the event for you.

Stretch it out

Whether you’re preparing for an indulgent day of Cinco de Mayo celebrations or you partied too hard at the Math Festival on Saturday, reset on Sunday morning with free yoga at Georgetown’s Lululemon location,  which offered every week. Mats are provided, just bring a water bottle and a positive attitude—even if you’d rather be at home in bed.
