As Memorial Day approaches, one local restaurant is breaking out boozy popsicles, while another is hosting an al fresco dinner of spring dishes. There are also ways to give back at a whiskey festival and a DC Central Kitchen fundraising happy hour.
Virginia hot chicken in D.C.
Anyone yet to travel to Ballston for the fiery fried chicken sandwiches at Hot Lola’s can try them in Petworth this week. As first reported by Washingtonian, chef Kevin Tien will cook up a limited run of them at his other acclaimed restaurant, Himitsu, while supplies last. The “Your body, your choice” pop-up, offering $10 fried chicken sandwiches, will benefit various pro-choice charities, including the National Network of Abortion Fund and The Yellowhammer Fund. (828 Upshur St. NW, Wednesday and Thursday, 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. or until sold out, a la carte)
Spring eating in Navy Yard
There is still time to grab tickets for Chloe’s spring garden dinner tonight. Chef Haidar Karoum will serve a family-style dinner followed by a three-course meal. Dishes include chilled fava beans, purple asparagus and snow peas with mint, lemon, olive oil and feta; hen of the woods mushroom shawarma, a strawberry pavlova, and other seasonal bites. The meal will take place outdoors, weather permitting, and drinks are available a la carte. (Chloe, Wednesday, 6 p.m., $66)
Happy hour for a cause
Grab a drink this evening at Radiator to help support DC Central Kitchen and Do More 24, a campaign to raise money for regional non-profits. The bar will donate 10 percent of all bar sales during the fundraiser straight to the DCCK. (Radiator, Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.)
Drink local (and small)
The taps at Roofers Union will flow tonight with local breweries that don’t typically distribute in D.C. Expect hard to find beers from Rockville’s 7 Locks Brewing, Odenton, Md.’s Crooked Crab, Astro Lab from Silver Spring, and others. (Roofers Union, Wednesday, 6 p.m. onward)
That’s a bingo
Cross your fingers for a lucky card at Atlas Brew Works’ inaugural bingo game this Thursday evening. Come sip some fresh beer for a chance to win free pints, flights, and bar tab credit. The event is expected to happen monthly. (Atlas Brew Works, Thursday, 7 p.m., free entry)
Experience a traditional Georgian feast
Come hungry to Thursday’s supra—a traditional celebratory feast—at Supra restaurant in Shaw. The all-inclusive meal typically begins with a variety of pickles and spreads before moving on to khachapuri, grilled meats and vegetables, and dessert. Wine, non-alcoholic beverages, tax and tip are all part of the lively evening of eating and drinking. (Supra, Thursday, 8 p.m., $125)
‘Marvel’-ous ballpark food
Superheros are jumping from the silver screen to the baseball diamond at this weekend’s first ever Marvel Superhero Day at Nationals Park, as the Nats face the Florida Marlins. It’s an excuse for all manner of novelty named food items, from green tortilla chip “Hulk nachos” at Cantina 202 to the two-and-a-half pound bone-in “Thor’s short rib hammer” at Old Hickory and the shaved ribeye “Iron Man-wich” at Steak of the Union. (Nationals Park, Saturday at 4:05 p.m., a la carte, game tickets start at $16)
Falls Church Distillers festival
Support the troops while sipping local spirits and chowing down on barbecue and other eats at the third-annual Falls Church Distillers festival. Participants also include fellow Northern Virginia distillers KO and Murlarkey. Admission includes a donation to Operation Turbo, which sends care boxes to deployed U.S. military. (Falls Church Distillers, Saturday, 12 p.m.-8 p.m., $25 and up)
An adult popsicle weekend
Don’t let the impending metro shutdown keep you away from $1 boozy freeze pops at Tasting Room in Old Town Alexandria. The European-style cafe will offer the adult treats all weekend, including in the outdoor courtyard. Cool off with French 75, kiwi mojito sour, and Bloody Mary flavors. (Tasting Room, Saturday-Monday, 11:30 a.m. to close, $1)
