A woman died after being rescued from a house fire on Tuesday morning just before 4 a.m., according to D.C. Fire and EMS officials.

The home was on the 2200 block of Lawrence Street Northeast. The woman’s adult son was found standing in the front room of the home, says D.C. Fire spokesperson Vito Maggiolo. As they led him to safety, he told firefighters that his mother was trapped on the second floor.

Firefighters then went up to the second floor and rescued the woman, who had “severe injuries not compatible with life,” Maggiolo says. She died on the scene soon after.

Officials have not yet released the woman’s name to the public, but Maggiolo tells DCist that she was in her eighties.

The fire pervaded every floor of the house, officials tweeted, including the attic. Investigators are working to determine the cause.

There were no working smoke alarms in the home, which the Department said “compounded” the danger of the fire.
