Picnic and a picture

You don’t have to be wildly wealthy to enjoy a flick about the fabulously loaded. The annual, outdoor summer film series Golden Cinema kicks off tonight with a free screening of Crazy Rich Asians. Pack a picnic, grab your blanket, and find your spot on the grass before the sun sets and the movie starts.

Sax not stacks

The 2019 DC JazzFest continues this weekend with events across the city. Some events are ticketed (read: cost money), but you can enjoy free performances right in your backyard. The Jazz in the ‘Hoods series will bring free events to Gallery O on H Friday night, a big kick-off concert for East River JazzFest at Anacostia’s Big Chair on Saturday at 1 p.m., the rooftop of the Eaton DC hotel on Sunday at 2 p.m., and more.

Oye poemas en Español

Teatro de la Luna presents its 27th Spanish-language poetry marathon this weekend, this year featuring Spanish poet Benito del Pliego. Poets from Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic will gather to share their work at this annual event. There’s also a reading Friday at the Library of Congress from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m., if your schedule can accommodate an activity in the middle of the afternoon.

Learn about women’s suffrage

No, “suffrage” does not mean “suffering.” The National Portrait Gallery is highlighting its Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence exhibit with a day of family-friendly fun. Family Day: Votes for Women will include music, arts and crafts, suffragist story time with the D.C. Public Library, and tours of the exhibit, which outlines the ongoing movement for women’s rights, from 19th century activism and 20th century suffrage to the Civil Rights Movement to today.

Be here and queer, on the pier

Yes, the Pride parade is Saturday—that’s an obvious choice. But you can also celebrate LGBTQ visibility at Pride on the Pier, a free, day-long event featuring music by DJ Rosie, Brothers Brau, and DJ Drew G, dancing, and other entertainment. Drinks will be available for purchase. Just a reminder that the Capital Pride Parade is from 4:30 p.m.-8 p.m. in Dupont and Logan Circles. It ends on U Street. You can see the parade, then hop on the Green Line to check out festivities down by the water in Southwest, where there will be a fireworks show at 9 p.m. That’s weather permitting, natch.
