The man suspected of fatally stabbing a D.C. woman who was jogging in Logan Circle last September pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in a District court on Friday.

A police investigation concluded that Anthony Crawford, 23, stabbed Wendy Martinez seven times at the intersection of 11th and P street on the evening of September 18, 2018.

If the court approves Crawford’s plea deal, he will face 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jesse Liu announced.

After stabbing Martinez, Crawford fled the scene, police say, throwing away his blood-soaked clothes along with his weapon, a kitchen knife he had previously stolen from a grocery store.

Following the attack, Martinez staggered into a nearby restaurant where she bled out as bystanders tried to save her. She died of her injuries hours later in a local hospital.

He was arrested within a few hours of the incident and has been in custody ever since. Police say there was no known motive behind the brutal attack—Crawford did not know Martinez.

Earlier this year, Crawford’s legal proceedings were put on pause as officials conducted a mental health evaluation of the suspect. The trial was delayed for more than a month, but a judge found that Crawford was competent to stand trial in March.

Martinez was the chief of staff at a local technology company and an avid runner.

Her fiancé, Daniel Hincapie, ran the Boston Marathon in honor of her life in April. He raised more than $13,000 for a new non-profit dedicated to causes that his fiancée believed in. The couple was just one week into their engagement when Martinez was murdered.

Crawford’s sentencing is scheduled for September 13, 2019.
