It is (finally) officially summer, which means it’s the perfect time to earn some endorphins outside. This month’s picks are mostly 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) long and promise opportunities to run through the heat. If you are really trying to avoid the humidity, never fear: Most of these races start early in the morning—and there is even an opportunity to get in your miles at twilight. As always, hydrate and wear sunblock, friends. 

Reston, Va.: Firecracker 5K

It’s a star-spangled run. Start off your Fourth of July festivities with a 5K that starts and finishes at the Reston Town Center. Red, white, and blue attire is encouraged. The event promises cash rewards for the top finishers, age group awards, and free photos—and military members receive a discount. Do you procrastinate signing up for races until the day of? You’re in luck: Registration is open on race morning until 7:30 AM.

Fairfax, Va.: Autism Speaks 5K

Spend the second weekend in July with Autism Speaks, an organization that supports the needs of people who live with autism and their families. Regardless whether you sign up as an individual or in a team, all finishers will receive a race shirt and a medal. There will also be overall and age group awards. Note that for safety reasons, headphones are not permitted on the course.

Washington, D.C.: DCRRC Bastille Day 4-Miler

The storming of the Bastille marked the start of the French Revolution—and the DC Road Runners Club is marking the day with a fast and flat four miler. The course follows the C&O Canal Towpath just beyond Georgetown. The race is also cheaper than most events you’ll find in the region: free for DCRRC members and $10 for everyone else. Due to park rules, there will not be same-day registration.

Crystal City, Va.: Crystal City Twilighter

Join Pacers Running in late July for a warm summer evening 5K through Crystal City. The afterparty is also worth sticking around for: There will be a karaoke competition, free beer, pizza, and according to race organizers, “lit beats.” Alexandria’s Port City Brewing Company will be providing some of the refreshments.

Washington, D.C.: 12Ks Of Christmas In July

It’s Christmas in July. On the last weekend of the month, run either a 5K or a 12K in the festive spirit. Both races are out-and-back courses on the C&O Canal Towpath with mile markers. The race also doubles as a costume competition, and in true Yuletide manner, there will apple cider at the finish line. Proceeds from the event will be used to support a Christmas dinner and Christmas gifts for families in the D.C. region.
