The District’s indie rock aficionados can breathe a sigh of relief—this year’s Fort Reno concert series is going down.

The beloved series, which attracts punk and indie rock bands from across the D.C. region, kicks off next week with shows Mondays and Thursdays for two straight weeks.

In previous years, the series butted heads with the National Park Service and U.S. Park Police over permitting and police presence at the events.

Fort Reno was almost cancelled in 2014 due to budgeting issues that arose when the Park Service asked that organizers pay for a police officer to patrol each concert. Each year since, the series’ return has seemed tentative.

But Amanda MacKaye, the show’s longtime organizer, confirmed to Popville last week that everything is in place for this summer’s festivities.

“As always, they will be on Mondays and Thursdays, with music from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.,” MacKaye told the local blog.

First up on July 8 is Broken Hills, a band that identifies as a “fully fleshed-out rock-and-roll quartet of moderately proficient musicians with questionable eating habits.”

The lineup so far features a total of 12 acts with names that range from pretty silly to downright outrageous, including Babies with Rabies, Dirt Eater, Erotic Thrillers, and Jackie & The Treehorns. MacKaye confirmed to DCist via email that the four shows announced so far are a partial list: The series will include nine concerts total.

The Fort Reno concerts started in 1968, long before the District’s punk scene had emerged. For the first decade, the series was dominated by blues and psychedelic acts. The series, which once received federal funding, was originally meant to soothe community tensions after the city was rocked by the U Street riots.

It wasn’t until the late 70’s that punk and hardcore bands started flocking to the festival. Ian MacKaye, the former frontman of Fugazi and Minor Threat and brother of future festival organizer Amanda, played a pivotal role in the series’ evolution as a centerpiece of the District’s punk scene.

Today, the concert series is volunteer-run and entirely funded by donations, which can be made to the organization’s Paypal account.

“Part of the mission of the concert series is to keep it about the music and the players by way of keeping it commercial free and only brought to you by the people who love it,” MacKaye told Popville.

As a reminder, booze and drugs are a no-go at Fort Reno, but concertgoers are encouraged to bring friends, dogs, and babies, according the organization’s website.
