By now you’ve probably noticed that it’s scorchingly hot. The city certainly has—the heat emergency plan is activated through Monday morning, and some public pools have extended hours.
With the National Weather Service forecasting “excessive heat” throughout the weekend, a bunch of events are throwing in the sweat-drenched towel and either postponing or canceling altogether.
Here a list of things to cross off your calendar for the weekend:
- Jazz in the Garden: The summertime concert series at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is canceled this Friday, but returns next week.
- Smorgasburg: The giant outdoor food market making its home in Navy Yard each Saturday through October says on Twitter that its ” spicy chicken sandwiches and ice cream are no matcha for 115 degree heat indexes!” It’ll be back next week.
- Crystal City Twilighter 5K: This annual race was going to have a misting machine to keep runners as cool as possible amidst the heat this Saturday evening, but Arlington County Fire Department “deemed the weather conditions unsafe,” according to Crystal City’s Facebook page. The race is not going to be rescheduled.
- Twilight Runfest: Crystal City isn’t the only jurisdiction canceling its twilight run this Saturday—Rockville, along with the Rockville Rotary, canned its Twilight Runfest 8K and Family Fun Run “due to predictions of extreme heat,” according to the event’s Facebook page. They’re hoping to reschedule for some time in the fall.
