Frenchy’s Natural will close after brunch on Sunday.

Six months after swapping out chicken for steak, Shaw restaurant Frenchy’s Naturel is closing this weekend. The steakhouse will serve its last brunch on Sunday, per a release.

Frenchy’s is the second concept for the corner spot at 11th and O streets. Eatwell DC—the restaurant group that also owns Commissary, Logan Tavern, and other D.C. spots—originally opened The Bird there in 2016, with an almost all-fowl menu. It quickly also gained attention for offering happy hour prices each time an official in President Donald Trump’s administration resigned, or Special Counsel Robert Mueller delivered an indictment to one of his colleagues.

But business soon slowed, as Eatwell DC owner David Winer told DCist at the time, in part due to the instability of going through four chefs in just two years, and to those highly frequented happy hours, which numbered around 30 in total. “The intention was nice and it drove drove thousands of dollars to our restaurant, but it was also a distraction,” Winer said in January. Sometimes it took our eye off dinner business.”

After a brief shutdown and makeover, The Bird reopened this winter as Frenchy’s Naturel, with a small menu of French bistro dishes, including bottomless fries with steak frites. The team chose to keep one successful element of The Bird running: brunch, with fan favorite dishes like chicken and waffles.

The Bird/Frenchy’s was one of a handful of D.C. restaurants that switch up their concepts to find a new customer base. “A clean slate was truly the best way to go and I’m happy about that,” Winer told DCist in May, after Frenchy’s had been in business for three months. “We’re more excited, there’s more enthusiasm for the product.”

It’s unclear what prompted this week’s closure. No layoffs are expected—all of the employees at Frenchy’s have been offered other positions at Eatwell DC establishments, according to the release.

For its final week, Frenchy’s will be open for dinner Wednesday-Saturday starting at 4 p.m., and for brunch on Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 a.m. The entire menu will be 25 percent off.
