After two years serving up vegetarian breakfast tacos in a candy-colored corner of Brookland, Fox Loves Taco has closed its doors. The restaurant announced the news Wednesday in a statement on social media.

“Unfortunately, due to issues beyond our control, we are unable to keep this location operational any longer,” the statement reads. “We are so grateful for all your kind words, patronage, and camaraderie over the past two years.”

When reached for comment, co-owner Matt Carr declined to speak on the record about the closure, citing legal reasons.

Fox Loves Taco opened in September 2017, in a space shared with The Bike Rack (which closed earlier this month) that was formerly occupied by Filter coffee shop. The morning-and-afternoon-only eatery was a part of the Little Red Fox family of restaurants in upper Northwest D.C., all owned by Carr and his wife, Jena. Their suite of spots includes The Den in the basement of Politics and Prose and Sugar Fox, the ice cream shop down the street from the bookstore, which opened earlier this year.

The shop specialized in breakfast tacos, all vegetarian with the option to be made vegan or gluten-free. Coffee, kombucha, and agua frescas were also on the menu. The space featured a large, bright mural, and was meant to be playful. “We chose a silly name to show that we don’t take ourselves too seriously,” Matt Carr told the Washington Post back when the shop opened.

It was not clear in the company’s statement when the shop would be closing, but a photo shared by a local journalist indicates the shop is already shuttered.
