For the 50th anniversary of the music concert that’s become a metonym for the peace and love vibes of the late 1960s, organizers sought to stage a Woodstock festival in upstate New York, close to the location of the original event.
But despite announcing an impressive lineup of musicians back in March, the Woodstock 50 festival has been plagued with woes, including multiple permit denials in the Empire State, and the loss of a production company and a financial partner. With three weeks to go before the festival is slated to begin, tickets still aren’t on sale.
That’s why Woodstock 50 plans to head a few states south in search of greener pastures for the August 16-18 event, according to a report from Bloomberg. Organizers of the festival now have their eyes on Merriweather Post Pavilion, per planning documents acquired by the outlet. Organizers for Woodstock 50 haven’t been commenting on the news.
Merriweather Post Pavilion is an outdoor concert venue in Columbia, Md.’s Symphony Woods, and it appears that Howard County officials are on board with the plan. They “jumped at the chance” to “bring a piece of American history to our community this summer,” county executive Calvin Ball wrote in a note to organizers, per Bloomberg.
Seth Hurwitz, the chairman of local concert and production company I.M.P., which operates Merriweather Post Pavilion, confirms that the venue has been in talks with the event’s organizers. “Woodstock 50 approached Merriweather about hosting their event here in Columbia, Md.,” Hurwitz said in an emailed statement. “The Woodstock folks are working on securing the artists now. If the bands come, we’ll produce the show. We’re looking forward to getting an update as soon as Woodstock 50 has one.”
Hurwitz is right to be somewhat skeptical about artists’ availability for the festival. On Friday morning, Jay-Z pulled out of Woodstock 50, the Associated Press reported. The rapper was slated to close the festival. John Fogerty, who played at the 1969 Woodstock, also dropped out, per AP.
However, Merriweather Post Pavilion already has a show scheduled on the weekend intended for Woodstock 50—The Smashing Pumpkins and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds concert on August 17 is currently promoted on Merriweather’s website and tickets are on sale. I.M.P. did not respond to questions about what the status of that show is.
This isn’t the first restaging of Woodstock to face issues. The San Francisco Chronicle called Woodstock 1999 “the day the music died.”
