Happy first full week of August. From outdoor movies, to movies about the outdoors, to pasta making classes, and an education about tiki drinks, here’s what’s on tap to do in D.C. this week.
MONDAY, AUGUST 5
OUTDOORS: For the third event in a four-part film series, Patagonia and Pizzeria Paradiso will screen 2017’s The Dawn Wall. The documentary details the exploits of climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson as the two men attempt to scale a 3,000-foot rock face in Yosemite. Fans of Free Solo should enjoy this one. Ticket sales will benefit Patagonia’s local non-profit of choice. (Pizzeria Paradiso, 7 p.m.-10 p.m., $15)
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS: The Anacostia Neighborhood Library and the Anacostia Community Museum will host a joint talk on Monday evening that explores the historic Barry Farm/Hillsdale community in Southeast D.C. Author Alcione M. Amos will speak about the founding of the community in 1867 by the Freedmen’s Bureau—and specifically about the women who were instrumental in forming the neighborhood. (Anacostia Neighborhood Library, 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m., FREE with registration)
ON THE VINE: California wine purveyor Talbott Vineyards will partner with Cork & Fork for an evening full of offerings from their famed winery. With each glass promising a “strong sense of place,” it’s likely that winos and amaetuer sommeliers alike will find something to love here. (Cork & Fork, 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m., $25)
TRIPLE THREAT: But if you decide that somehow just tasting wine isn’t enough, Walter’s Sports Bar is having a wine, dine, and paint event at their Southeast location. A free glass of vino is included in the price, as well as everything you’ll need to paint your own masterpiece. (Walter’s Sports Bar, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., $35)
MORE: Comedy, Magic & Martinis (The Mansion on O Street, 5 p.m.-8 p.m., $50), Live Music at Marvin: Tyler Leak Freeform (Marvin, 6 p.m.-11:30 p.m., FREE with registration), Songbyrd Presents: Sir Woman (Songbyrd, 7 p.m.-11 p.m., $15)
TUESDAY, AUGUST 6
WESTERN SKYLINE: The L.A. folk band Dawes is entering its tenth year together (a fact that might make you feel very old) and is still one of the most charming—and fun—bands to see in a live setting. The band plays the Lincoln Theater this week. (Lincoln Theater, 8 pm., $40)
COUNT THAT PAPER: An art that’s been around for hundreds of years, paper flower making seems easy, but can be super difficult to master. If you’re looking to hone your skills or just need to scratch an arts and crafts itch, the Lemon Collective will offer a class teaching you how to create your very own flower. (The Lemon Collective, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., $65)
SAVAGE: Atlanta rapper 21 Savage will headline The Anthem on Tuesday as part of his I Am > I Was tour. The young phenom is one of the genre’s most interesting young talents and is a can’t-miss for rap fans. (The Anthem, 8 p.m., $55 – $505)
MORE: Molly Burch (Songbyrd, 7 p.m.-11 p.m., $13), Golden Triangle BID TriFit (Farragut Square, 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m., FREE), Broken Mic Comedy Presents Ladies TakeOver Tuesday (Shenanigan’s Irish Pub, 8 p.m.-10 p.m., FREE)

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7
DOWNWARD . . . GOAT?: In case yoga needed to be a little more adorable, new baby goats will be on hand at Arlington’s Faith Lutheran Church Wednesday evening for a goat yoga practice. Absolutely worth the trip into Virginia, if we do say so ourselves. (Faith Lutheran Church, 6 p.m.-7 p.m., $35)
SOUR: Budding mixologists, cocktail enthusiasts, or real tiki drink fans will have plenty to get excited about with Archipelago’s drink event dedicated to a deeper understanding of sour-based drinks. Cocktail historian Philip Greene will do a deep dive into the history of the drinks, how to make them, and more. One ticket includes four sample-sized cocktails. (Archipelago, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $50)
IT’S BOBSLED TIME: The 90s classic Cool Runnings will screen at NoMa’s First and Pierce lot on Wednesday evening. A millennial favorite, we bet that you’ve already got the movie’s catchy–and lovable–chant stuck in your head. (First and Pierce, 6:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m., FREE)
UPTOWN FUNK: The last installment of Uptown Main Street’s Music on Main series will be held at Jackie Lee’s. Full of live music, food, and fun, it’s a big block party that’s bound to get you moving and grooving as the sun goes down. (Jackie Lee’s, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., free entry with registration)
MORE: BYOV – Bring Your Own Vinyl at The Graham Rooftop(The Graham Georgetown, 6 p.m.-9 p.m., FREE with registration), The Healing Power of Communication with Katie Couric (Lohrfink Auditorium, 5 p.m.-6 p.m., FREE with registration)

FREE: Singer and songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter will perform at the Hamilton–but there’s a slight twist: the backing band will come from pre-recorded vinyl album that Frankenreiter himself will drop the needle on. Think of it as extreme karaoke. (The Hamilton, 6:30 p.m. doors, 7:30 p.m. show, $20-$25)
HOT HOT HEAT: Are you an avid fan of Hot Ones? Have you survived tasting a ghost pepper? Do you just love hot sauce? If you’ve ever thought about trying your hand at making your own hot sauce, Cultivate the City will host a workshop where you’ll have a chance to create a specialty hot sauce. Just have some milk handy. (Common Good City Farm, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., $30)
