MONDAY, AUGUST 19
DRINK IT UP: Tyber Creek and The Outrage will team up, Voltron-style, for a wine tasting event that focuses entirely on women winemakers. Offering five tastings from five different vineyards, you’ll get to sip inside The Outrage’s fun 14th Street space. (The Outrage, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $22.50 – $45)
BRASSY: Trumpet player and Washingtonian Paul Bailey will play a show at Blues Alley on Monday evening. He’s been playing since he was 9 years old (!) and has performed frequently at Oberlin’s Jazz Forum, as well at the Obama White House. With a passion for not only playing jazz, but educating others about it, it’s a performance not to be missed. (Blues Alley, 8 p.m., $25)

TUESDAY, AUGUST 20
TRICKY: Jia Tolentino, writer for The New Yorker and (formerly) Jezebel, will visit Politics and Prose on Tuesday to talk about her truly superlative book Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion. Focused on cutting through both the good and the bad of our modern life, Tolentino’s book (which, I must stress again, is so good) approaches subjects like the Internet, grifters, and more with her signature wit and thought-provoking prose. CRAFTY: Based out of Austin, Texas (but formerly of D.C.), Allie Launius—otherwise known as Stampworthy Goods—will return to the area to host a pop-up shop with some of her one-of-a-kind furniture pieces. Completely refurbished and embellished with fun new details, the result is something that’s truly unique. (The Lemon Collective, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., free entry)
CIDER HOUSE RULES: Capitol Cider House will open their doors to invite patrons in for a grand cider tasting with their master cider maker. Boasting a tasting of all 12 of their local ciders, you’ll also learn all about how cider is made, and its history in this region. (Capitol Cider House, 6 p.m.-9 p.m., $20)
WHAT A DAY IT HAS BEEN: Fans of writer Aaron Sorkin’s beloved NBC series The West Wing will want to make their way to Pinstripes for a trivia event on one of the best drama series ever. SPEAK ON IT: The What She Said speaker series returns on Wednesday evening with a panel dedicated to female White House correspondents. Moderated by New York Magazine’s Olivia Nuzzi, Kaitlan Collins (CNN), Tamara Keith (NPR), and Anita Kumar (Politico) will all talk about their experiences covering their careers—including the highs, lows, and advice learned along the way. SIT: Director Christopher Guest’s cult comedy classic Best in Show will be the feature of the week for NoMa’s outdoor screening. While there’s plenty of entertainment to be found in the beloved comedy, be sure to come early for a pet costume contest, complete with prizes for the top three winners. VALLEY GIRL: Los Angeles rockers Death Valley Girls will play DC9 for what’s bound to be an electric and high energy show. Filled with raucous guitar parts and compelling vocals, their latest album Darkness Rains often feels like it can barely be contained, nearly exploding out of your headphones with vibrancy and power. Their show is likely to be the exact same way. (DC9, 8 p.m., $12)
STORY TIME: The Story Collider’s August series will focus entirely on true tales of things lost—and found—throughout science. Five storytellers will speak in the Bier Baron loft, in what’s sure to be a personal and compelling set of tales. (Bier Baron Tavern, 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., $15 – $20)

Chef Matt Baker will prepare a series of courses that are all inspired by his favorite summertime favorites. SWINGIN’ THE NIGHT AWAY: Looking to dance the troubles of the week away? The Omni Shoreham hotel will host a Night of Swing that features tunes from the 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. COOP’D UP: A celebration of women and women artists, the gallery show Hen House will open on Thursday night at Jackie Lee’s in Northwest. BOTTOMS UP: In celebration of the new book Cocktails Across America, Kramerbooks will host authors Anne Peck-Davis and Diane Lapis to talk about their experience chronicling the post-Prohibition era of drink-making.
