Jazz it up in Silver Spring
With temperatures around the low 80s, it’s a good time to get outside and groove to some live music. The Silver Spring Jazz Festival is just around the corner, featuring performances from Grammy and Emmy award-winning artist Arturo Sandoval. A host of other prominent jazz artists, including Allison Crockett, the Eric Byrd Trio, Marcus Johnson, and Lena Seikaly, are performing, too. Quick tip: Bring a chair.
1 Veterans Place, Saturday, 3 p.m.-10 p.m.
Late-night rollerskating
Did you know there’s only one roller skating rink in D.C.? This Saturday, the Anacostia Skating Pavilion is partnering with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival to host Family Late Skate—get free skate rentals all night when you bring your ID. (In fact, you can get free skate rentals during regular operating hours until Labor Day.) Feel free to bring your own grill and relax at the rink, too. Be’la Dona, an all-female funk fusion band, will be performing, as will DJ Spirit. There will also be discussions about folks’ visions for the future of the park.
Anacostia Skating Pavilion, Saturday, 5 p.m.-10 p.m.
Learn from ping pong pros
It’s your last chance to learn from ping pong champions, including 14-time Swedish national champion Malin Pettersson, in a series of complimentary lessons offered this summer from the underground ping pong bar SPIN. The class is open to players of all levels and will go over some basic ping pong tips—how to perfect your stance, hold the paddle correctly, and more. If you’re interested, sign up soon, because space is limited.
SPIN DC, Saturday, 1 p.m.-3 p.m., registration required
Rooftop yoga
12 Stories and Yoga Factory are partnering this weekend to host a yoga class on the roof of the bar. There’s fruit and water on offer during the class, as well as a bottle of prosecco for parties of two or more on the house if you stay for brunch (for participants 21 and over). Bring your yoga mat and save your spot at RSVP@mokimedia.com.
12 Stories, Saturday, 12 p.m., registration required
Dolley Days
It’s almost the 205th anniversary of the British army’s march on Washington in 1814, when Dolley Madison fled from the White House to safety at Dumbarton House. This weekend, you can commemorate that storied past with historical re-enactors, lawn games, ice-cream making, and other activities for kids. In addition, Dumbarton House will offer self-guided tours this weekend, where you can explore its archives and look at documents on the Madison family.
Dumbarton House, Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
