Celebrate the (relatively) cooler weather with fast runs through our area’s local parks, downtowns, and neighborhoods. This month, runners can run for finish-line treats ranging from fresh egg souffles to a glass of wine.
Rockville, Md.:Park’s Half Marathon
Kick off the month with the Montgomery County Road Runners Club for a half marathon through Rockville’s park system. Participants can decide to run the full race by themselves or in a two-person relay. There will be aid stations every two miles—and the finish line will be stocked with food from Mama Lucia, including New Orleans egg souffles and baked ziti.

Vienna, Va.: Navy Federal 5K Run/Walk
Hit the pavement in Vienna with the 27th annual Navy Federal 5K. The event promises cash prizes, entertainment, and post-race celebrations. Race proceeds will benefit the Committee for Helping Others (CHO) and the Wounded Warrior Project. There’s also a canine perk: if you register your dog for the event, you receive a doggie goodie bag.

Washington, D.C.: Grub for Good 5K
Don’t worry about the clock: The Grub for Good 5K is an untimed run/walk with Rock Recovery and Potomac River Running Store. The course will follow part of the National Mall and end at the Potomac River Running Store on F Street. The event’s funds support people living with eating and body image disorders and participants of all fitness levels are encouraged to join.
Saturday, September 14 // 3.1 Miles // $15 – $20
Clarendon, Va.: Clarendon Day Run
Participants at the Clarendon Day Run compete in the 5K, the 10K, or both. No matter which distance you pick, all participants receive a t-shirt, a medal, and a free drink (21+) at one of Clarendon’s restaurants or bars. The event supports No Kid Hungry and the Wendy Martinez Legacy Project, an organization honoring the life of Wendy Martinez who was killed while running in Logan Circle last fall.
Saturday, September 21 // 5K, 10K, or 15K // $10-$55
Reston, Va.: Wicked Wine Run
If you’re 21 or older, stretch your legs in Lake Fairfax Park for a race with costumes and food trucks. Participants in the 5K race celebrate with wine after crossing the finish line … but those in the 1K walk are treated to four tastings of wine along the course. If that’s not enough, there is also an option to participate in both races back-to-back.
