Teachers and staff at Barnard Elementary School are raising money for a nine-year-old boy who died after a fire consumed an unlicensed rental property in Brightwood more than a week ago.
Yafety Solomon was a student at Barnard for nearly his entire life, per the GoFundMe page set up to raise funds. His teachers remembered Solomon as bright, kind, and courteous, the page says. He dreamed of being a lawyer, and had a passion for reading and making people laugh.
“One teacher’s recollection was him running up to her in the mall full of excitement to return to school on Monday, dragging his mom around to be sure he had all his supplies for school,” the page reads. “Little did she know this would be her last hug, her final conversation and her last moments with Yafet.”
As of Tuesday morning, the page had racked up more than $6,000 in donations, which will be given to Solomon’s mother to help her pay for funeral, medical, and other expenses.
Solomon was taken off of life support and died at a hospital after being trapped in the rental property where he lived during a fire on August 18. Mayor Muriel Bowser is calling for a federal criminal investigation into the matter, as the home where Solomon lived was being illegally rented out. Per the police account, it was a maze of rooms, with several sections partitioned off with locked security gates. The setup made it more difficult for rescuers to access the space and help occupants out during the blaze, officials said.
Solomon and a 40-year-old man, identified by the Washington Post as Fitsum Kebede, were found unconscious and not breathing at the back of the first floor of the home. Kebede died on the scene, while Solomon died at a hospital later.
The Post reports that Solomon’s mother has been staying with a friend, and that she has been too distraught to speak publicly about her son’s death.
