The Internal Revenue Service headquarters was evacuated Friday morning after fumes were found at the scene caused by an overheated backup battery supply, according to D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
No one was injured in the incident, which resulted in an evacuation of the building and the closure of Constitution Avenue NW between 10th and 12th streets. The hazmat team concluded their work as of 11:45 a.m.
The overheated backup batteries were found on the second floor of the downtown IRS building.
“When batteries malfunction, they provide fumes, a strong odor,” spokesperson Vito Maggiolo told DCist. “There’s also the potential of battery acid leaking. We found no product spillage. Once we ventilated the room, now everything is returning to normal and it’s in the hands of the building maintenance people.”
While the fumes can sometimes be toxic, he wasn’t sure if that was the case in this incident.
Contrary to at least one report on social media, the batteries were not related to scooters, according to Maggiolo (though there have number of battery-related scooters fires in recent months).
