Julie Egermayer opened the first Violet location in 2011. It has since moved to The Shay in Shaw.

After eight years and two moves across the city, D.C.’s women’s clothing store Violet Boutique, now in Shaw’s mixed-use complex The Shay, is closing. Owner Julie Egermayer announced the news Monday on Instagram, saying the shop’s last day will be Oct. 20.

“What made Violet so special was the community of incredible women who have shopped with us,” Egermayer wrote. “The store has truly been a magical place for me and one that I will never forget.”

Egermayer opened Violet in 2011 in Adams Morgan, where it quickly gained notice for its affordable prices—most of the items like clothing, statement jewelry, and shoes for women were under $100. The shop moved to a bigger location in Georgetown in 2016, and finally settled into its digs at The Shay apartment building (following a brief pop up in the development) in 2018.

Egermayer has not responded to requests for comment. In her statement, she said her reasons for closing the shop were personal, but also “related to the business environment that retail, in particular small retail, will face over the next few years.”

As early as January 2018, Egermayer told WAMU she was feeling the pressure amid the online shopping boom. “I know there’s a lot of people that want to shop local,” she said. “But the truth is even if they have the best intentions, they’re still shopping online.”

The Shay, in particular, has had trouble finding its footing with a local audience. Once a haven for high-end menswear, the JBG Smith development has seen clothing retailers come and go in quick succession, including Argent, Kit and Ace, Steven Alan, and Bucketfeet. Now, the development includes a mix of national brands (Warby Parker, Bonobos, Le Labo) and local clothing and food (Lettie Gooch, Compass Coffee, Union Kitchen Grocery, Cava, and newly-opened Gogi Yogi).
