Update 9/17/19: It’s the end of the … bagel conveyor belt, I guess, for Call Your Mother. Bon Appetit announced its Hot 10 list of the country’s best new restaurants, and the Park View bagel shop failed to make the cut. If you want a taste of top 10 action, you have two nearby chances: Richmond’s fine dining restaurant Longoven took the No. 3 spot, and in Baltimore, French bistro Le Comptoir du Vin was crowned No. 8.
Original: Remember when everybody in this city whined about how “There are no good bagels” and “In New York you can get great bagels on EVERY corner”? Now that’s been replaced with choruses of “Have you been to Call Your Mother yet?” and “How long was the line?” And it’s not just in the District: Bon Appetit is the latest national outlet to shower praise on the Park View bagelry, naming it to its annual list of best new restaurants in the country.
Call Your Mother is the sole D.C. establishment to get a nod on the list, which is a bit of a dip in the amount of praise the magazine usually bestows on this town. For the last three years, three restaurants have made it to each edition of the list—2017’s crop included Call Your Mother’s sister restaurant, Timber Pizza—and some spots have progressed even further. Bon Appetit named Maydan as its No. 2 best new restaurant last year, and in 2016, Bad Saint also took home the silver. 2016 was also the year the mag proclaimed the District was their restaurant city of the year.
Meanwhile, the Call Your Mother team must also be getting used to all the attention: The self-described “Jew-ish” deli with Argentinian influences only opened in October 2018, but has already earned a spot on Eater’s best new restaurants list. And that was after the restaurant was so overwhelmed by lines of customers snaking around the block on its first weekend, that it had to change up the menu to be more speedy. A second location of the bagel shop is opening in Georgetown, they announced this summer. Co-owner Andrew Dana and chef Dani Moreira also run the Petworth restaurant Timber Pizza, which was named by Bon Appetit in 2017 as the country’s best pizzeria.
In her brief writeup for this year’s best new restaurant list, Bon Appetit’s deputy editor Julia Kramer calls Call Your Mother, “the deli where a bagel should be followed up with a black-and-white alfajor.” Moreira’s menu is stacked with deli stapes—think pastrami, latkes, and babka—that come with influences from her childhood in Argentina. The dulce de leche alfajor cookies are among those additions, as are cheesesteaks stuffed with sofrito and black-and-white concha.
“To all the team at CYM, THANK YOU for all your hard work (we gonna be celebrating!),” the restaurant team wrote in an Instagram post about the news. “Thank you D.C. for repping us from day 1!”
The magazine will announce which restaurants have made it to the top 10 list on Sept. 17. (See above.) But the potential for more Bon Appetit acclaim isn’t the only thing Dana and Moreira are celebrating this month: The business partners also announced their engagement last week.
