Update, 9/23/19: According to a Michelin spokesperson, a “technical error” on the site is to blame for the early release of the 2020 Bib Gourmand list.

Maybe it was an errant strike of the “publish” button, maybe it was a restaurant expert who thought this was a particularly slow news day. Either way, the Michelin Guide has released its list of “affordable” Bib Gourmand restaurants in D.C. a day early, revealing that 10 new restaurants have made the cut.

Michelin’s Bib Gourmand designation is reserved for moderately-priced restaurants. An eatery must meet specific financial requirements to be considered: The company’s famously anonymous restaurant inspectors must be able to order two courses and a glass of wine or a dessert for $40 or less.

The company may have added 10 new restaurants (considerably fewer than the 19 that it added last year), though it also axed a few spots from the list. Notably, often-crowded Filipino restaurant Bad Saint didn’t get a return spot on the Bib Gourmand list, having made the cut for the past three years. Other drop offs include Maydan, another spot that received national acclaim upon its opening, and Doi Moi. Two restaurants that previously got nods do not make an appearance here following their closures earlier this year: Spark near Bloomingdale and Kyirisan in The Shay development in Shaw.

Still, the list included surprising new additions. Particularly notable is the inclusion of Ethiopian mainstay Zenebech, a restaurant that opened in Shaw in 1993 and moved to Adams Morgan in 2017. Two Laotian restaurants made the cut: Laos in Town in NoMa and Hanumanh, a spinoff of Thip Khao, that opened in Shaw earlier this summer.

Michelin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Here’s the full list (new additions are in bold):

As for the Michelin Guide’s annual list of starred restaurants, according to an email sent to media late last month, those named will be unveiled on Oct. 1. But after the surprising debut of the Bibs, who knows!
