Paint jam
The annual Word Beats & Life Festival is happening throughout the weekend, with the biggest events on Sunday: the Fine Lines Paint Jam and Freshest of All Time: Breaking and House Jam at the Kennedy Center. Find more than two dozen artists, a producer showcase, a creative career pavilion, family friendly activities, and more. In the evening, D.C. hip hop veterans ARK (Dimensions, Noyeek, and producer Theory) will perform.

Kids + Kusama
Little art lovers welcome! The Hirshhorn’s weekly Storytime explores art through stories and movement with a different theme each week. This week reading is Let’s Play by Herve Tullet, an interactive book that encourages children to create art. Kids will be able to see Yayoi Kusama’s pumpkin and then try their hand at making polka dot art.

Get ready to race
Have you ever heard of cyclocross? Me neither! Come learn about this form of bicycle racing at Trek Bicycle in Arlington. This workshop is open to riders of all levels who identify as woman, trans, or non-binary. Confident attendees may sign up for a pre-ride on Saturday or a race on Sunday.

Go big on Bauhaus
The National Building Museum is hosting a day of events in honor of Bauhaus, the influential German art school founded by Walter Gropius. Listen to museum curator Susan Piedmont talk about the Bauhaus legacy. Finesse your design skills through workshops for all ages based on Bauhaus design principles. And visit the fourth floor, which is usually closed to the public, on a historic building tour.

Full-body ballet work out
Check working out off your to-do list with a free barre class offered by The Washington Ballet. This all-ages class will utilize floor workouts, stretching, and free weights to give you a core of steel. This event is part of The Washington Ballet’s Dance for All Celebration, which ends on October 19. The program aims to share the joy of dance through performances, demonstrations, and classes (many of them free). Check out the full slate of programming here.
