D.C. United has ended its streaming deal with FloSports after less than a year.

The Major League Soccer franchise signed the $12 million deal with the subscription-based service in January, expecting the partnership to last up to four years. But it was beset from the outset by both technical issues and viewers’ frustration with the expense.

The announcement comes comes three days before Austin-based FloSports was scheduled to stream the team’s regular season finale against FC Cincinnati. Instead, the October 6 game will be available on the D.C. United website free of charge. The remainder of the season will be broadcast through MLS partners Univision/TUDN, Fox Sports, and ESPN.

Previously, D.C. United’s regionally broadcast games appeared on several local TV stations. When the franchise entered into the partnership with the streaming service in January 2019, executives touted the deal as a new way to provide fans with “an innovative and high-quality viewing experience.”

Fans, with a subscription of $5.99 or $8.99 a month, could stream non-nationally broadcasted D.C. United games on any device that supported the FloSports app. Subscribers were also promised additional programming like behind-the-scenes access and preseason training with their subscription package.

But many where turned off after the very first stream, which had significant technical difficulties. Taking games off the airwaves also made accessing the team’s games inaccessible just as D.C. United entered a more high-profile era, with star forward Wayne Rooney and a brand new stadium.

FloSports declined to comment on the end of the deal, which was first reported by the Washington Post.

It’s not yet clear what will happen next year. In a statement, D.C. United said “announcements on broadcast plans for the 2020 season and beyond will be made in due course.”
