A Coast Guard lieutenant from Silver Spring that prosecutors alleged was plotting to commit terrorist attacks has pleaded guilty to gun and drug charges in federal court in Maryland, per court documents. Christopher Paul Hasson has not been charged with any terrorism-related crimes, despite prosecutors’ allegations that he is a white supremacist who had spent years stockpiling weapons and planning to murder Democratic politicians and other left-leaning public (and even private) figures.
Hasson’s sentencing will take place on January 31 of next year, per the court docket. The U.S. Attorney’s Office plans to seek a possible life sentence, and wants a full day to present witnesses and evidence that day, reports the Washington Post. The judge noted in the courtroom on Thursday that the statutory maximum for the four charges Hasson has pleaded guilty to is 31 years, according to the outlet.
Hasson has pleaded guilty two counts of possessing unregistered silencers, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by an addict, and one count of possession of a controlled substance, the opioid Tramadol.
In court filings arguing for Hasson’s continued detention awaiting trial, prosecutors said that the 50-year-old acquisitions officer at the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters in D.C. was a “domestic terrorist, bent on committing acts dangerous to human life that are intended to affect governmental conduct.”
Per court filings, Hasson wrote in deleted email drafts that he was “dreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth,” whether by biochemical warfare or an attack on the world’s food supply. He espoused white supremacist ideas in his private writings, including that “Liberalist/globalist ideology is destroying traditional peoples esp white … Much blood will have to be spilled to get whitey off the couch. ” He mused about the appropriate targets for his violence, concluding that “Professors, DR’s, politician’s [sic], Judges, leftists in general” were his best best.
Police found searches on Hasson’s computer suggesting he was looking for ways to harm prominent public figures, including “where do most senators live,” “are supreme court justices protected,” and “where is morning joe filmed” (a search allegedly performed after Hasson saw a headline in which the MSNBC host Joe Scarborough had called President Donald Trump “the worst ever.”)
When searching Hasson’s Maryland property, federal agents found that he was also stockpiling weapons, ammunition, and steroids. They turned up 15 firearms, more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, and more than 30 bottles of a substance labeled as human growth hormone, according to court filings. They also reportedly found 4,200 tablets of Tramadol.
Still, prosecutors never charged Hasson with any terrorism charges. In April, a judge ordered him released pending his trial, but another judge blocked that release and Hasson remained in custody. Per the Post, Hasson remains on active duty with the Coast Guard pending the outcome of an administrative investigation, which is scheduled to begin after the criminal proceedings have ended.
