Ivy City will soon be home to a new type of social club, with a bar that serves both both beer and juice boxes.
The Lane, a 7,880-square-foot family social club in Northeast, is set to open in January 2020. It will have events and spaces—like chaperoned play areas and an all-day cafe—for both parents and children to enjoy themselves.
While on maternity leave with their second children, friends Molly Nizhnikov and Rachel Lubin realized D.C. proper is lacking in places for the entire family to spend leisure time together. Indeed, there’s seemingly few questions that rile Washingtonians more than whether it is acceptable to bring children to bars and some restaurants.
And many places cater explicitly either to children or adults. “In the world of dual income families where your time is limited, you don’t want to sacrifice that time only to please one half of your family,” says Nizhnikov.
But there won’t be any choosing sides at The Lane.
“We were looking for places to comfortably be, as new moms and people who like to get out of the house,” Nizhnikov said. “It’s a relic of this old school mentality that spaces are either for adults or for kids, and that doesn’t line up with the way families today want to spend time together.”
In the two-story building, designed by FORM Architects, Nizhnikov and Lubin focused on creating an open-floor design with ample space for children to run and play, while also providing areas for adults to relax and have conversations. The first floor will house chaperoned play structures and other interactive equipment for kids like a rock-climbing wall, ball pit, and slide. Couches and plush seating will be dispersed throughout the space for parents and caregivers to interact with each other while watching their children.
A cafe and bar will serve food and drink from local businesses, allowing parents to enjoy coffee and croissants while their kids sip on apple juice and munch on a grilled cheese.
The second floor will house a second cafe, two private rooms for events and parties, and an outdoor rooftop area.
The women intentionally left much of the design as open space, encouraging pop-up events and games that can engage both parents and children. The pair hopes to host a range of different events as a part of The Lane’s programming, like music and cooking classes, outdoor movie nights, and s’mores roasting.
A family membership, priced at $80 per month, will cover up to three adults and two children for unlimited visits. New parents can sign-up for a discounted membership of $175 for three months, and enjoy new parents meetups and the promise of cleaning up after baby-made messes.
Alternatively, guests can also purchase drop-in day passes: $17 for one child for two hours and $22 for the full day.
The Lane has started offering pre-sale memberships, and plans to host several launch events before the club officially opens in January.
The Lane is slated to open in January 2020 at 1408 Okie Street NE
