Let us take a short pause from our ritualistic adoration for the pennant-winning Washington Nationals to admire a different athlete: the one and only Jackson Friedlander.

Don’t let the Capitals jersey or two goals on Capital One Arena ice fool you—young Friedlander isn’t technically a National Hockey League player. He was part of the Caps’ “mites on ice” tradition, in which young tykes take to the ice during the game’s first intermission.
Then, one is crowned the “Mite of the Nite,” and gets an interview. When we say Friedlander, the Mite of the Nite during Wednesday’s victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, makes the most of his time in the spotlight, we aren’t even slightly exaggerating.
To answer the question of who his favorite player is, Friedlander responds, “It’s Ovech-e-kin” before quickly transitioning into talking about his tarantula named Michael. “He’s a curly hair,” he says. “He just had two crickets on Monday and one on Sunday.” The interviewer starts to take the microphone back when he adds, “He has a big appetite.” (Should we worry that Michael the tarantula might gobble up these mites on ice? Probably not.)
Unfortunately, because Deadspin has already adopted him, we must resign ourselves to merely joining his prodigious fan club. Even the Capitals official account granted that “This might have been the greatest Mite of the Nite interview EVER.” The announcers note that he’s “just as good a talker as he is a scorer.”
Friedlander has the energy we must all endeavor to take into our weekends. Before the interviewer plays the clips of his two goals on the big screen, she asks if he’s ready. He exclaims that he is, and she begins to move her mic away.
But Friedlander isn’t done. “I’m so excited. I’m like, seriously excited,” he says. “I’m kinda shy but mostly excited … and courageous.”
