Bundle up for an outdoor dance performance

Explore The Kennedy Center’s newest expansion, the REACH, with a free dance performance on the building’s rooftop lawn. The REACH will be featuring Robert Woofter’s Electric Idols piece, a dance number inspired by nightlife culture. There is no prior registration for the event, so make sure to arrive with enough time to secure a good seat. Jackets and blankets recommended.
The REACH at The Kennedy Center, Friday, 6 p.m.

Get spooked on the mall

National Mall and Memorial Parks Rangers will be hosting “Tales of the Odd and Unusual on the National Mall.” Come out at dusk to hear rangers tell some of the strangest and most bizarre stories of the Mall’s 217-year history.
Washington Monument, Saturday, 7 p.m.-8 p.m.

Bask in Rock Creek’s autumnal beauty

Escape the bustle of the city this weekend with Washington DC History and Culture’s Fall Colors Walk. Organizers will meet at the historic Peirce Mill building for a brief exploration of the site’s exhibits before beginning the two-hour-long stroll through Rock Creek’s Western Ridge Trail, stopping at Boulder Bridge, a great spot for photos. Be sure to bring water and comfortable shoes.
Peirce Mill Building, 2401 Tilden St NW, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Celebrate Día de los Muertos at The Wharf

Head to Pearl Street at the Wharf for a Day of the Dead Celebration. Bring the whole family (and your furry friends) for a day of live music and crafting. The celebration will feature La Unica, a D.C.-based Irish-Latin band. Get your face painted, or test out your own artistic ability with sugar skull decorating. The best self-painted faces will receive a prize at the end of the event. Food and beer stations will also be slinging treats.
Pearl Street at The Wharf, Saturday, 2 p.m.-5 p.m.

Stay dry in the Portrait Gallery

Sunday’s forecast might not lend to pumpkin picking or costume parades, so spend some time indoors with curators from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Two curators from the Portrait Gallery will be leading a tour of The Outwin 2019: American Portrait Today exhibition. The exhibition showcases work from 46 finalists in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, the gallery’s triennial competition that encourages artists from the country to submit their own contemporary portraits.
National Portrait Gallery, Sunday, 3 p.m.
