The High Heel Race returns on Tuesday in all its glitter-fueled glory. It is the second year that the iconic event will be run by the mayor’s office, lending a slightly more official air to the 33rd race.

For the uninitiated, the 17th Street High Heel Race started in 1986 with a small group of drag queens sprinting in heels down down 17th Street. It grew into one of the city’s most beloved events, and huge crowds gather to see the one-tenth mile race ( it traditionally takes place on the Tuesday before Halloween). While it’s just good fun for many race participants, others take getting to the finish line first quite seriously.

“You have to jockey for a good start. A good half of winning the race is the first couple seconds of the race, and then it’s having the stamina to keep up with the few people who made it out to the front,” Craig Williams explained to DCist. He would know: Williams won the race in 2008, 2011, and 2016.

For nearly two decades, the event was run by the former manager at JR’s Bar & Grill and current owner of Pitchers, Dave Perruzza, with some support from the city. But the government officially took over last year.

“D.C. is a whole mix-up of everything, and the High Heel Race is what symbolizes D.C. better than any other event in the city. It really does bring everyone together, and there’s no drama. It’s good that it’s a city event—and now it finally is—and it’s going to go on forever,” Perruzza told DCist last year.

The High Heel Race also means street closures around Dupont on Tuesday night. Here are all the closures to be aware of, per the Metropolitan Police Department.

The following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic for the event from approximately 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.:
• S Street, NW to south of P Street, NW on 17th Street, NW
• 16th Street to 17th Street, NW on Riggs Place, NW
• 16th Street to 18th Street, NW on R Street, NW
• 16th Street to 18th Street, NW on Corcoran Street, NW
• 16th Street to 18th Street, NW on Q Street, NW
• 16th Street to 18th Street, NW on Church Street, NW
• 16th Street to 18th Street, NW on P Street, NW

The 17th Street High Heel Race will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The parade of queens takes place from 7-8:50 p.m. The race kicks off at 9 p.m. (the entire thing only takes about 10 minutes). It starts at R Street NW and ends at P Street NW.
