A scream-worthy screening
Revisit a Halloween (Christmas?) classic, Nightmare Before Christmas at at the Kennedy Center, which will be screening the flick on the video wall at the REACH. The showing is a Halloween event, rescheduled from Thursday due to inclement weather. Before the screening, Dance Metro D.C. will lead a dance class to appropriately spooky season hits (think “Monster Mash” and “Time Warp” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show). Food and drinks will be available on-site from food trucks nearby, or guests may bring a cooler for food and drink that holds less than 16 quarts (but no outside alcohol or glass is allowed). Bring a lawn chair for watching from the plaza, or blankets for lounging on the grass.
The REACH at the Kennedy Center, Friday, 6 p.m.-10 p.m.
Stargaze away
Explore the night sky with the National Capital Astronomers. Started over sixty years ago, Exploring the Sky is a monthly event for gathering and watching the stars. This time, attendees can catch a glimpse of the moon, the Pleiades star cluster, and the winter constellations through a telescope. Star-gazing veterans and beginners alike are welcome. Attendees can meet at Grove 13 near the Nature Center. Parking is available near the grove.
Rock Creek Park Nature Center, 5200 Glover Road Northwest, Saturday, 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
Nats fandom, but make it art
This weekend, the Phillips Collection will offer free admission for anyone wearing Washington Nationals gear, in celebration of the team’s historic World Series win. In the permanent collection, check out the Rothko room for Rothko’s colorful, abstract paintings. Right now, an LED installation from the Cuban artist collective Los Carpinteros is among the exhibits on display.
Phillips Collection, Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, 12 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
Break out your bowler hat and bicycle
Ladies and gents, don your best attire and take a bike ride around the District. Dandies and Quaintrelles, a vintage-loving social group, is inviting those who love pocket watches and brogues as much as they do their bikes to their Tweed Ride and Jazz Age Jam. Attendees will gather at secret location (disclosed to those who register) at 11 a.m. to embark on the ride at noon. And don’t forget to pack a lunch for a mid-afternoon picnic break. The ride will end at Roofer’s Union in Adams Morgan where—for a $20-$25 ticket—riders can enjoy dancing and music by the Foggy Bottom Whomp-Stompers band.
Location unknown, Sunday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
Sunday Zen
Enter a new month with a little extra zen with a free yoga session from Lululemon’s Navy Yard location. The activewear shop’s weekly all-levels class features a rotating selection of instructors and practices. Some mats are available, so organizers recommend bringing your own. Doors open at 9:45 a.m.; plan to arrive 10 minutes early for check-in.
