Damage from a major water main break at Glebe Road and Chain Bridge caused a boil order for parts of Arlington and D.C. on Friday.

Update 11/10/19: The boil water advisory due to a major water main break at Glebe Road and Chain Bridge has been lifted. The advisory had been in effect since Friday morning for parts of Arlington County and D.C.

DC Water announced the lift shortly after 9 a.m. on Sunday, as did the Arlington Department of Environmental Services.

In a release Sunday, DC Water said they “lifted the boil water advisory after tests confirmed that drinking water meets all water quality safety standards. Samples were tested from multiple sites in the impact area and tests have verified that there is no risk to drinking water safety.”

The portion of Glebe Road near where the break occurred also reopened on Sunday, according to Arlington officials, but additional repair work will be necessary.

A boil water advisory is in effect Friday for parts of Arlington County and D.C. due to a major water main break at Glebe Road and Chain Bridge.

Affected areas are expected to continue under the boil advisory through the weekend. DC Water and the Arlington Department of Environmental Services have said the earliest the advisory would be lifted is Sunday (Nov. 10). The advisory was issued due to a loss of pressure at the water main break.

DC Water has released an interactive map of the affected Northwest D.C. area (below). The Arlington Department of Environmental Services has also released a searchable map of the affected Arlington area.

Officials from both Arlington and D.C. said there is no indication any water has been contaminated. But they will not lift their respective advisories until two rounds of tests come back clean. Results of the first tests should be available tomorrow, officials said.

“We don’t have any reason to think that we have a problem,” said Mike Moon, the chief operating officer for Arlington DES, “but we have to put [the advisory] out primarily as a safety consideration.”

Chain Bridge was also closed this morning in both directions due to the break, but lanes of Chain Bridge Road partially reopened as of about 10 a.m. The portion of Glebe Road where the break occurred will likely be closed through the weekend, according to Moon.

Major damage near the site of the break was captured by NBC4’s Megan McGrath and the the Arlington Department of Environmental Services:

Also closed Friday are public schools and offices in Arlington.

Water pressure drops are being reported in several locations near the break and in parts of D.C. Officials are asking residents to avoid turning on taps if possible.
