/ Mayor Muriel Bowser

Earlier this year, Mayor Muriel Bowser called former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg a “mentor and a friend.” On Friday, the extent of their friendship became clear when the mayor willingly lit her own Twitter mentions on fire to support Bloomberg’s expected presidential run.

“An important voice is entering the race for President,” she tweeted. “From climate change to common sense gun reform, @MikeBloomberg doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk. Democrats — let’s get out and vote in 2020”

The mayor was promptly ratioed. Her tweet has more than 300 replies, only 47 likes, and just 14 retweets within two hours.

I can’t think of a less important voice to join the race but go off,” wrote one commenter. Some other choice responses: “I think all of (local) D.C. Twitter collectively did the dog head tilt on this one”, and “omfg did she get hacked,” and “Bro you posted cringe.”

And, my personal favorite, “Mayor Muriel Bowser Presents Getting Ratioed.”

Bowser’s office has clarified that the tweet is not an endorsement of Bloomberg as the Democratic nominee. A spokesperson declined to answer additional questions, referring DCist back to the original tweet.

It’s not the only time that the mayor has tweeted somewhat obliquely about the presidential race. In September, she amplified a tweet in support of Senator Kamala Harris.

Bowser’s support of Bloomberg isn’t altogether surprising. She has tweeted kind things about the former NYC mayor in the past, and the two have also met several times, including at last year’s Bloomberg Health Summit. Last year, D.C. won the Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge.
