A chili dog with popcorn at The Boardwalk.

Anna Meyer

This week’s food events are anchored by a two-day cooking trade show, a new beachy bar destination and some pop-up dinners on anticipated Latin restaurants. There’s also a chance to sip some Scandinavian spirits, get festive with apple brandy and more on this week’s calendar.

Stroll down to The Boardwalk

It took just nine days to transform Penn Quarter’s Iron Horse Taproom into The Boardwalk, a game-filled space designed to evoke ocean breezes and t-shirt weather. The bar, from the team behind Takoda and Cortez, is now open with draft beers and beachy draft cocktails like a buttered corn old fashioned, a cotton candy collins, and a riff on boozy sangria. Hot dogs (chili is an option), popcorn, and ice cream sandwiches make up the focused food menu. Happy hour is planned seven days a week. (507 7th St. NW, open with happy hour from Mondays-Fridays 4 p.m.-7 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays 2 p.m.-5 p.m.)

Knock back some aquavit

Fight tomorrow’s frigid weather with some Scandinavian aquavit, a distilled spirit popular in the region. Mikko restaurant in Dupont Circle is paring its Nordic cuisine with aquavit cocktails and shots on Thursday as part of international aquavit week, an initiative to bring awareness to the little-known drink. RSVPs are open online. (1636 R St. NW, Thursday, 6 p.m.-10 p.m., a la carte)

El Cielo breaks through

Acclaimed Colombian chef Juan Manuel Barrientos is offering curious diners a limited-time tasting menu while he puts the final touches on his D.C. location of El Cielo inside the La Cosecha food hall. The eight-course menu will be an exploration of Colombian cooking through inventive dishes based on yucca bread, turbot with coconut rice, and more. There will be two seatings each night from Wednesday through Saturday, with reservations available online or by emailing the restaurant. Wine and cocktails (a la carte) will come from neighboring bar Serenata. (1280 4th St. NE, Wednesday-Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., $125 per person)

Shop, taste and learn the newest food trends

The MetroCooking DC trade show returns to Washington this weekend with its lineup of vendors, cooking demonstrations, seminars, and tastings. Many of the headliner meet-and-greets are sold out, but don’t fret: Live stage sessions from chefs like Martha Stewart and Kwame Onwuachi are included in general admission. There’s also a ticketed beer, wine, and spirits garden and aisles and aisles of shopping to browse before the holidays. Tickets are on sale now for events on both days. (801 Mt. Vernon Pl NW, Saturday 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m., $21.50 and up)

An early look at La Famosa

Slated to open in Navy Yard next year, the Puerto Rican cooking of La Famosa will host a pop up at Right Proper Brewing’s Brookland location this Saturday. Stop by during the afternoon for bites including fried cheese balls “bolitas de queso,” crab fritters, and a hangover-curing pork, ham and steak “tripleta” sandwich. (920 Girard St. NE, Saturday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., $5-$9)

Get ready to be Autumn AF

Squeeze the last fall vibes out of November with this Sunday’s “Autumnal AF” bartending competition at Republic Restoratives. The afternoon will feature the distillery’s Chapmans Apple Brandy, with five local bartenders battling it out for the title of best cocktail. Guests can sample each of the entries and vote for their favorite and will also get discounts on apple brandy bottles to take home. Tickets are up for advanced purchase online. (1369 New York Ave. NE, Sunday, 2 p.m.-6 p.m., $25)

Friendsgiving cocktails

The Royal invites you to toast with your closest friends at a Friendsgiving party this Monday night, no cooking required. Guest bartender Lauren Paylor of Dos Mamis and Pom Pom is getting into the holiday spirit with drinks like the “We Will Not Break Bread With You,” which uses squash and maize along with white whiskey and tonic. And The Royal’s Jake Kenny has created a savory old fashioned using turkey-infused bourbon, herbs, and buckwheat honey. Beer, shots, and a spicy fried chicken sandwich will be served until the early hours. (501 Florida Ave. NW, Monday, 8 p.m.-1 a.m., $8 cocktails)

From Spain to South America

Specials include more than 20 wines by the glass sourced from spots like Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, and Bolivia. Or grab a pisco-based “slushito” while sharing plates of grilled prawns, Peruvian-inspired ceviche and hanger steak with chorizo and chimichurri. (1520 14th St. NW, through the end of November, a la carte)
