THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 28
READY TO RUN: Whether you’re an ultramarathoner or the type that avoids running at all costs, Thanksgiving has become synonymous with Turkey Trots. Work up your appetite for the big meal with a run. Though the Arlington Turkey Trot is sold out, take your pick between any one of your remaining local options, including the Prince Williams Turkey Trot at 8:30 a.m. at the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center in Manassas, Va., or the Alexandria Turkey Trot at 9 a.m.
GREENERY: Go from sea to shining sea in this year’s Season’s Greenings: America’s Gardens holiday show at the U.S. Botanic Gardens. Open year-round—yes, even on Thanksgiving—the annual exhibit pays tribute to iconic gardens with plant-based recreations. If you can’t make it on Thursday, go on select Tuesday or Thursday evenings in December for live seasonal music. (U.S. Botanic Gardens, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., FREE)
DANCING QUEEN: No matter if it’s your first or 50th time taking in The Nutcracker, nothing says the holiday season has arrived quite like the sounds of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s score, including the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Catch the Atlanta Ballet’s presentation of the iconic ballet through Sunday. (The Kennedy Center Opera House, 7:30 p.m., $49+)

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29
GIVE BACK: If reflecting on all that you’re grateful for has you hungry to help out, head to Rock Creek Park for a morning cleanup hosted by Blue Planet DC. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. (Peirce Mill on Tilden Street, 10 a.m.- 12 p.m., FREE)
ALL AGLOW: It’s opening night for Zoo Lights, the National Zoo’s annual display of dazzling seasonal lights. Open from Nov. 29 to Jan. 1 (except Dec. 24, 25, and 31), prepare to be illuminated by 500,000 environmentally friendly LED lights and dozens of animal lanterns and 2 laser shows set to music. (National Zoo, 5 p.m.-9 p.m., FREE)
CONCERT SPOTLIGHT: It’s the first night of deadmau5’s two-night CUBE V3-2019 Tour residency at the Anthem. For the sonic and visual adventure, the masked DJ is joined by ATTLAS and Monstergetdown. (The Anthem, 6 p.m. doors, 7:30 p.m. show, $44.50+)
WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA: Use your holiday weekend to head to Hogwarts. Led by conductor Steven Reineke, NSO Pops presents Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in concert, featuring the National Symphony Orchestra performing composer Nicholas Hooper’s score live with the film shown in HD on the big screen. Performances continue on Saturday and Sunday. (The Kennedy Center Concert Hall, 7 p.m., $29+)

STAY WARM: Who needs chestnuts roasting on an open fire when you can have s’mores? The Impulse Collective’s Snuggies, Onesies and S’mores. MUSIC MOMENT: Over her genre-spanning career, Alice Smith has had her music reinterpreted by Prince and has covered Nina Simone. SLAM DUNK: Catch some holiday hoops this weekend: You’ve got two opportunities to see the Greensboro Swarm take on the Capital City Go-Go in NBA G League action. The teams also go head to head on Friday at 7 p.m. (Entertainment & Sports Arena, 3 p.m., $8+)
CHRISTMASTIME IS HERE: As ambassadors of the genre, the Eric Byrd Trio—that’s pianist/vocalist Eric Byrd, bassist Bhagwan Khalsa, and drummer Alphonso Young, Jr.—has performed alongside jazz legends. Watch the trio perform the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack with a screening of the film on The Hamilton’s big screen. (The Hamilton, 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., $14.75+)
