The International Square Food Court will shut down at the end of the month, joining the long list of eateries to close up shop in D.C.
Located next to the Farragut West Metro station, the food court is an easy lunchtime option for the area’s many office workers. It’s the type of place where a passerby can make a quick stop for lo mein, a burrito, or chicken curry.
An unnamed employee from Sichuan Express initially tipped off Popville about the food court’s closing. But Dorris Moreno, an employee at Burrito Brothers, confirmed it to DCist. “The whole thing is closing at the end of the month,” he says.
Marina Barrera, the manager of Burrito Brothers, received a notification letter in mid-November telling her she must vacate the space by December 31. She says the news wasn’t much of a surprise.
“The thing was, my lease was up in December of last year. So when the lease was up I asked them what was going to happen to me, was the lease going to be renewed? And they said no, they weren’t renewing leases anymore,” says Barrera.
The food court’s owners told Barrera she could pay her lease on a month-to-month basis. She opened the business in 2003, and some of her employees have been with her for years — one for a decade, another for six years, a third for about three years, she tells DCist.
“They’re very sad, and I told them that if they wanted to go and look for another job before I close then they should do it, I would understand,” she says.
Her employees have decided to stay until the last day. On December 24, Barrera will spend the day closing Burrito Brothers with her staff who, within a day, will be in need of a new job.
Barrera hopes to open another business, but tells DCist that high rents in the area will make this difficult.
Tishman Speyer, the real estate company that owns the International Square building, has not yet announced what may replace the food court.
“We are currently in the process of finalizing our plans for the future of International Square and hope to have an announcement soon,” said a spokesperson from the company.
