MONDAY, DECEMBER 16
PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD: If your sweet tooth hasn’t been satisfied by the bevy of holiday cookies floating around, perhaps you’d like to make some sweet treats that are also a statement. The Outrage and local artist Alia Ally will host a class that will walk you through the steps of creating chocolate art, featuring your favorite activists and social justice warriors in a unique spin on food decorating classes. ZEN-LIKE: If the holidays have left you more stressed than joyful, perhaps a trip to the yoga studio should be at the top of your list. Massage and wellness studio The Well is hosting a restorative yoga class specifically focused on providing stress-relief for those in need. Breathe, exhale, repeat until all that stress is gone. JOYFUL CHORUS: Ride your sleigh to the Kennedy Center to hear some holiday tunes at the Songs of the Season concert. The show will be full of classic holiday carols as performed by the Choral Arts Chorus and the Youth Choir. It’ll be hard to not leave this show full of the holiday spirit. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17
GRAFFITI: James Beard Award-winning Chef Edward Lee will host a special private dinner on Tuesday night structured around America’s melting pot of cuisine at The Fourth Estate restaurant. Chef Lee will draw inspiration from his recent book Buttermilk Graffiti, creating a five-course meal that includes seared beef rib-eye with prunes, fish curry in banana leaves, and Korean doughnuts for dessert. Guests will also get drink pairings and a copy of the book. (Fourth Estate Restaurant at the National Press Club, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., $90)
SHORTS: Film fanatics in D.C. won’t want to miss the third annual Shorts After Dark film festival. Hosted at the Miracle Theater, the festival will showcase a series of seven short films from local area filmmakers, including slasher flicks, music videos, mobster movies, and more. With a live Q&A panel to come after, see a collection of talented creators show off the fruits of their labors. (The Miracle Theater, 7 p.m.-10:30 p.m., $10)
DECORATIVE: I know we already talked about holiday cookies, but, well … ’tis quite literally the season. If you’re in need of tasty treats for an upcoming party or just want to put a cookie cutter to work, be sure to visit Baked & Wired on Tuesday for their Holiday Cookie Decorating class. I SIP IT: Prepping for a big holiday party with no idea what drinks to serve your guests? Shop Made in DC’s Wharf location has got you covered with their Holiday Cocktail Demo + Tasting class. Hosted by Marcelle Folk of Wine Key Experience, attendees will get the chance to learn a few tips and tricks for making a successful holiday party, while also providing plenty of chances to taste test the selections. IN THE WEEDS: Trying to make sense of current events? Check out the live taping of the highly popular political podcast The Weeds. The Vox podcast is hosted by Jane Coaston and Matt Yglesias, and will dive into all the latest news in our political landscape in front of a live audience. (Sixth & I, 7 p.m., $30)
FAIREST OF THEM ALL: In what Entertainment Weekly calls “a sumptuous new production,” the musical My Fair Lady will play at the Kennedy Center as part of a month-long engagement. OPEN: But if you’d rather perform instead of watching someone else, the Acoustic Open Mic at Union Stage might be more your speed. Hosted by Rachel Levitin, there’s sure to be no shortage of talent looking to impress and surprise. (Union Stage, 8 p.m.-11 p.m., FREE)
