Runners participate in the annual New Year’s race.

New year, new races. Jumpstart 2020 with a series of cold—but fast—races around the region. Not too long after the clock strikes in the new year, local residents can flock to Mayor Muriel Bowser’s free annual 5K, or a race in Reston. Throughout the rest of the month, runners have options up to 10 miles. The best part? Given the chilly temperatures, most events will have warm drinks at the finish line.

D.C.: New Years Day Fresh Start #FITDC 5K

At 10 a.m. on January 1st, join Mayor Muriel Bowser for the annual Fresh Start 5K. The event is in Anacostia Park and participants are invited to run, walk, or… if you stayed out too late night before… cheer along the sidelines. Unlike most races, this event is free to the public. Note that the free t-shirts are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

D.C.: Al Lewis 10-Miler and 5-Miler

On the second Saturday of the New Year, the D.C. Road Runners Club (DCRRC) is holding the third race of their annual Snowball Series, with 5 and 10 mile options. The event is a flat course around Hain’s Point—guaranteeing fast and cold times for participants. Note that due to permitting restrictions, there won’t be any same-day registrations. At $10 for non-members (it’s free for Road Runners club members), it is also one of the cheapest races in the region. Interested in joining the event, but don’t want to race?
