Dozens of times a day, packages disappear from front stoops and apartment building mailrooms across D.C.
Of course, they’re not getting up and walking away. People are stealing them, and this month it’s been happening more than ever.
Newly released data from the D.C. police department shows that the number of package thefts reported this December is on pace to double the number from last December.
The Metropolitan Police Department has received 153 reports of package theft between December 1 and December 15, compared to 213 in all of November. A spokesperson said the department would not be able to provide a report on theft incidents during the holiday period until after the Christmas holiday is over.
If package thefts continue apace through the end of the year, December 2019 will win the dubious honor of Most Package Thefts of any month in the past five years.
Popular Washington online community forums like NextDoor are bursting with stories of package thieves. Many posts are accompanied by videos taken by doorbell cameras like Ring. Still, the number of reports outpaces the ability of homeowners, police, or delivery workers to stymie thieves.
The Metropolitan Police Department data also shows a marked increase in package theft reports in every month of 2019 compared to previous years. So far there have been 2,141 packages reported stolen in 2019—a 38.7 percent increase from last year’s total.
The problem isn’t unique to D.C. The New York Times recently reported that more than 90,000 packages a day are stolen in New York City—up 20 percent from for years ago.
