Celebrate Kwanzaa with song

Find your next boozy gift

New Year’s Eve is upon us, which might mean you’ve got a house party to pick up “just a little something to drink” for. Instead of grabbing the closest bottle in your corner store’s fridge, bring something new you discovered at one of this weekend’s free tastings around town. First, Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits is hosting its weekly wine tasting, featuring a rotating selection of sips. Saturday’s event at Wardman Wines in Brookland is about all things sparkling from around the world (because it’s not all Champagne).
Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits, Friday, 5 p.m.-8 p.m.
Wardman Wines, Saturday, 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Dance like it’s 2019

2019 was full of hit songs that made us say, “Who sings this one? Is it Ariana Grande? It’s not? Well who else is there?” Songbyrd Music House will be playing them all so you can Shazam them—or, you know, just dance. In addition to playing the year’s hits, they’ll be taking requests and giving away prizes. There are special prices on food and drink, too.
Songbyrd Music House, Saturday, 7 p.m.-11 p.m.

Meet your new plant friend

Perhaps you resolved to make 2020 the year you finally developed that green thumb. Get a headstart at this weekend’s plant cutting swap hosted by 3 Stars Brewing Company. Just bring a healthy plant or two or a plant cutting, and exchange them for some new green guys. And if your previous plant friends met … well, an untimely end, swapping the nice pots they vacated is acceptable, too. Reserve your spot by emailing holland.lyn@gmail.com.
3 Stars Brewing Company, Sunday, 12 p.m.-3 p.m., RSVP required.

Learn to tango

Next month, In Series will present its new take on Carmen, staging Georges Bizet’s sultry opera in a cabaret setting, mingling with the audience at bistro tables. Before the aptly named Le Cabaret du Carmen debuts on Jan. 4, hear how the show came together from its director, Tim Nelson, and the musicians and experts who guide its dancing and musical performances. Afterwards, get a quick tango lesson to see if you could keep up with the tragic heroine herself.
The Public Option, Sunday, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. RSVP required.
