A non-profit group is subsidizing rides during the holiday season in hopes of keeping drunk drivers off the road.
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program, which works to prevent drunk driving, is offering $15 off rides on Lyft. People in the D.C. region can visit soberride.com for a code that can be used on the ride-hailing app.
The offer can be used on one ride each night between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. until January 1.
Kurt Erickson, the program’s president, said that while the non-profit offers transportation on several holidays, New Year’s is the busiest time. The organization has offered nearly 80,000 rides through its SoberRide program since 1991, he added.
“I’d much rather have record ridership and figure out how we’re going to pay for it, than wake up the next morning and realize that there’s these 100-percent preventable fatalities,” Erickson said.
Nationwide, 285 people in the United States died in drunk-driving accidents between Christmas and New Year’s last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Deaths from drunken driving have climbed across the region in recent years, according to an annual report released in January by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. In 2017, 86 people died from traffic accidents that involved alcohol or drugs—27 more people than in 2016, according to the council’s study.
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program spends about $50,000 of its money each year to pay for rides and also relies on business sponsors.
Before ride-hailing apps, the non-profit offered rides with taxi companies. It began using Lyft exclusively in 2017, and the number of people taking advantage of the service has surged, Erickson said.
